Date Story #16- Sacrificing Lambs

So in the last love story post...which was probably a year ago I wrote about J.D. and I being separated for 3 whole miserable days over Christmas break. What I forgot to mention was my conversation with my brother Choc (who managed to fit the label of what a big brother is supposed to be during this conversation). My family and J.D.'s family are both LDS and therefor we are encouraged to get married in the temple. I had never been through the temple and J.D. had from before his mission. My brother Choc had also been through the temple to receive his endowments before his mission. So after dropping J.D. off at his home in Holden America, Choc tried to lighten the mood and talk about something other than J.D. Needless to say he also took advantage of this vulnerable moment for me.

Choc: So are you scared to go through the temple?
Me: No, not really. Everyone says that I won't believe it's my religion, but I don't believe them. I can't imagine it being like that. I know you watch a movie and wear different clothes..... what do you wear?
Choc: Well, ya we aren't supposed to talk about it, but it's just white. I was totally freaked out when I went through. It's...... it's just weird.
Pause
Choc: Did they tell you about the lamb?
Jenny: What.... there aren't lambs in the temple!
Choc: Yeah there are, but you're not supposed to talk about them because if you do it's less likely people will go through.
Jenny: what?! What do they do?
Choc: I can't tell you, but just hold onto the lamb! Don't let go or they get really mad at you. I let go and they were pissed.
Jenny: They sacrifice the lamb??? what...?
Choc: Jenny! I can't talk about it, but just don't let go......they'll clean everything up. Just don't let go.
At this point I can honestly say I was a little freaked out. It definitely took my mind off J.D. I was starting to second guess actually going through the temple, especially since I knew not all of my family members would be able to go through the temple. I was torn and seriously traumatized by visuals of myself holding a lamb as they killed it. From what Choc had told me, all I could do is assume sacrificing/killing a lamb is what he meant....

I didn't talk to J.D. or ANYONE about what Choc had told me in fear that Choc would get in trouble for talking about what goes on in the temple. I continued going to temple prep classes with J.D. and never did they mention the lamb. It was like what Choc said, 'they don't tell people because they don't want to scare members off.' I got thinking about all the people I knew that had gone through the temple and how they said, "It's like not something I thought was part of our religion." That's what they meant.....

Two weeks before our wedding, I went into my bishop's office for my temple recommend interview and broke down in tears! I couldn't take it anymore. I told my bishop I didn't want to go through the temple.
Bishop: Why? What's wrong?
Me: I can't tell you because I don't want to get my brother in trouble.
(Remember, Choc and I were in the same ward because we lived in the same apartment complex. SO we had the same bishop)
Bishop: What.... (confused)?
Me: I just had to say it, "I don't want to sacrifice a lamb."
Bishop: (chuckling but trying to be serious because he could see how much this thought affected me) "We don't sacrifice lambs in the temple!.... Choc told you that?" The look on his face made me feel like he couldn't believe that I was that gullable...
Me: Yeah! (I began to tell him what Choc had told me)
Bishop: "Well that isn't true at all. And I will take care of Choc for telling you that."

After that, I told J.D. what had happened because I came out looking like I'd been crying. haha! It was hilarious! J.D. could not stop laughing about it.

The bishop did get back at my brother. He went up to him and told him he was going to take his temple recommend away for telling people what happens in the temple. My brother had obviously forgotten all about what he'd said to me at Christmas time because it was now March... The bishop said, "Sacrificing lambs..... really Choc?" Choc busted up laughing and to this day laughs about how he didn't think I'd actually believe him. haha!

So.... needless to say there is no sacrificing of lambs in the temple and I was right about the temple not being weird. A shout out to Choc if he ever reads this... you upheld your big brother status and continue to do so- thank you!
